Saw this coment on rediff. Some North Indian gave bad review to Cheeni Kum and others were commenting about Illayaraja - both bad and good
Some Tamilan got offended and gave one of the most coolest praise for Raja...here it goes
Well, I think the music of Ilaiyaraaja itself is a generation, an era. Why? when you are the first Asian to perform at RPO of London, you are an era. When you have scored music for nearly 850 movies (that is almost 4000 songs not to mention the BGMs), you are an era. When The Great Naushad said that you have achieved what we haven't achieved in 100 years, you are an era. When you have the record for the Tamil album (Thiruvasagam) that sold more numbers than any other Tamil album, you are an era. John Williams took seven months to one year to compose music for Saving Private Ryan. When you compose music for the whole movie in weeks possibly in days for Oscar bidding, thats too three movies (Nayagan, Anjali, Hey Ram), you are an era. When you write music for a movie in front of the director and producer in few minutes, may be an hour and the album goes on to become one of the greatest audio hits (Chinna Tambi) ever, you are an era. And despite all these achievements if you weren't awarded any major central government award, you are an era and example of bias in our present day India.

I too did read that - there are few who have written bad reviews on cheeni kum..and also have told that this is not Ilayaraja's best!

we discussed some aspect of it quite closely.. but comming to the rehashing of older hits. yes there no harm i doing it. song is a fashion it a cycle. somebody needs to carry some of his classical beauties to next part of generation and world.
i guess IR did that by rehashing his yester year beatuies with shreya.g. of-course for me mandram vandha-S.P.B @his best. its my fav all time song.. but if u look closely
there is one song vizhil - 100vathu naal song its getting rehashed to kannada and then now to hindi.
i never see a kanadiga listening vizhil song even though few of the people come across the movie but every individual get along with kannada version of that song( jothey alli, jothey alli ).
like that he just carried his golden composition to next set of audience. for south-indians or tamilans mandram vandha is the best . who knows hindi audience may welcome cheeni kum hi cheeni kum hi hip-hop version.
further rehashing is just a approach for commercial cinema medium bound to work with various other parameters. :)
if u look IRs personal un-constrained album u can get the magic or some classic movies.
definitely IR, ARR, Yuvan , deva , are some of the good musicans ) with good knowledge

as for cheeni kum's music...heard it...though all the tracks are rehashed versions of raja's own older tamil hits...they sound fresh nevertheless..and as for how the North indian junta might take it...well there are people who do appreciate the music...as for the Himesh reshamiya, annu malik lovers hehe....they got no clue what they're talking about...so...nevermind :D
Bollywood music has gone to the dogs lately....you have to have a track imported from across the border, dowse it with sufism and rope in a DJ to render a remixed version of it...If Ilayaraja had done that; this album would have recieved a positive nod from the junta!...originality is unheard of!
as for the nooravadhu naal song...a kannadiga i know jumped up on hearing the cheeni kum song proclaiming it's a kannada song...i probably prompted at a wrong time that all cheeni kum songs are from raja's old tamil hits including this one. i looked up to see her staring back at me as if i had ruined her party...'you mean even this song's not originally in kannada???!'

forgot one point, the so called gurus of music had called rang de basanti's music mediocre before the movie hit the theatres...once the movie was out they couldn't resist saying, well...it's scored perfectly for the film...
